WAOL Courses

WashingtonOnline hosts distance-learning courses for the Community and Technical Colleges. WAOL can accommodate fully online courses as well as hybrid courses with on campus components. WAOL makes it possible for colleges to share classes as well as hosting private classes.

The five types of courses WAOL hosts include:
1) System-funded, shared courses*
Course developed in coordination with WAOL and funded by the CTC system. Once this course is assigned a WAOL Course ID number, other colleges may adopt the course, therefore it is 'shared'.
2) College-funded, shared courses*
Course developed at a college with college funds, with the intention of sharing with other colleges.
3) College-funded, private courses
Course developed with college funds. The course may not be adopted by other colleges.
4) College-funded, private, hybrid courses
Traditional on-ground course with less than 50% online component.

5) Flexible courses
Courses that make use of a schedule or billing model that does not fall into the college YRQ-based structure. Examples of these courses may be faculty or staff training or other continuing education.

* Sharing courses is unique to WAOL. Here's how it works: Once college creates and submits a course to WAOL. Once this class is approved other colleges can adopt the course and place it in their course catalogs. When participating colleges enroll students into a shared course, enrollments from multiple colleges pool together at WAOL. WAOL works with college Faculty and DLC's to manage the instruction of shared courses.
