WAOL Start-Stop Dates Conventions

Length of Quarter

Fall, Winter and Spring quarters are 10 weeks

Summer quarter is 8 weeks

Start-Stop Dates

  • Enrollment opens for Winter, Spring and Summer two weeks after the current quarter Count Day; Fall enrollment opens two weeks after Summer enrollment begins
  • Classrooms are open the Thursday of the week before instruction begins
  • Instruction begins on the Thursday of the week that most colleges begin their quarter
  • Enrollment ends on the same day that instruction begins
  • The Count Day is calculated by counting 10 days for a 10-week quarter and 8 days for an 8-week quarter, excluding weekends and holidays
  • Instruction ends on the Wednesday of the 10th week
  • Grades are due to WAOL by 5:00 pm of the Monday following the last day of instruction
  • Student access is deleted the Wednesday after the Monday grades are due

Calendar Pattern

This pattern of dates not only tends to more closely match the majority of college start-stop dates, it also allows the Summer quarter to end at the earliest possible date so that students moving to WSU have their grades as soon as possible.

  • Fall instruction begins in the third full week of September
  • Winter instruction begins on the first Thursday after January 1
  • Spring instruction begins either in the last week of March or first week of April
  • Summer instruction begins in the third week of June
