How to Read for Optimum Learning

  1. Skimming: Skimming is a type of fast reading that allows the reader to generalize the information and to pull out the essential elements of the reading material.
    • Skimming can provide a powerful overview of the basic information
    • Skimming gives you the main idea when you don't have time to comprehend or read over all the fine details.

  2. Note Taking Online: If you are reading on a computer screen, you can take notes by cutting and pasting the text into a new MS Word document.

  3. Critical Reading: This high level of reading, while slow, provides the deepest understanding. This allows readers to differentiate between facts and opinions. In critical reading, the reader asks questions while reading the material.

  1. Read a chapter on a topic of your choice.

  2. Write down one sentence about what you just read.
