Avoiding Computer Viruses

A computer virus can destroy data on your computer or can send your personal information to the sender, facilitating identity thievery. However, antivirus software that helps protect your computer from viruses is available from several manufacturers. Examples of antivirus software include Symantec's Norton Anti Virus and McAfee Virus Scan. In addition, a free virus scan is available on the Internet at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall/.

There are several additional methods for helping to avoid viruses:

1. Don't open e-mails from anyone you don't know.

2. If you ignored the first rule, though, DO NOT click on any attachments, particularly ones with file names ending in extensions normally used for executable files and macros, such as: exe, com, bat, vbs, etc.

3. Don't download files unless you trust the source.

4. When you're not using your computer, turn it off.
